Area Description

Halfway House became Midrand municipality in 1981 and integrated into the City of Johannesburg in 2000. Though not an independent town, Midrand is used to denote the general residential and commercial nodes between northern Woodmead / Waterfall and the southern outskirts of Centurion. The N1 highway runs through Midrand with several off-ramps at strategic points along the 5-kilometer stretch starting from Allandale and ending at Old Pretoria road near the SA Mint. Suburbs that are generally regarded as being part of the greater Midrand area are Country View, Carlswald, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Vorna Valley, Waterfall (incl. Mall of Africa), Noordwyk, and Randjesfontein. 

Halfway House is a commercial node consisting of several roads running in north-south and east-west directions, creating a grid pattern. Pretoria Main road to the east and the NI freeway to the west. The main arterials access routes through the suburb are from north to south are; Old Pretoria road, Richards drive, and Pretoria Main road (k101). Main routes running east to west are; Allandale road (m39), Le Roux Ave, and Church Street. 

The properties within this node are mostly funded syndicate or company-owned freehold commercial properties. The demand due to access, facilities, age, and location are high demand. Most are industrial in nature, but there are also a retail, office, and hospitality properties spread in amongst them. Conferencing, education, and mini warehousing can be seen in the older parts of Halfway House. 

More recently large-scale logistics, distribution, and financial services businesses have made this area home and can be clearly observed from the freeway. The area boosts Grand Central airport, Kyalami racetrack, Gallagher hotel & conference facility, Waterfall estate, Mall of the North.
