Area Description
Betty’s Bay is a small, low-density coastal town on the Overberg coast of the Western Cape, within the Overstrand Municipality, strung along Clarence Drive between Pringle Bay to the west and Kleinmond to the east. The town sits between the Atlantic and the Kogelberg mountains, inside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, and is characterised by fynbos-covered slopes, scattered holiday and permanent homes, and very little commercial development. Local shopping is limited to the small centres along Clarence Drive at Jock’s Bay and the Village Centre off Klipspringer Road, with the nearest full service towns being Kleinmond to the east and Hermanus further along the coast. The area’s attractions are natural rather than built: the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden with its mountain walks and waterfalls, the Stony Point Nature Reserve African penguin colony, Jock’s Bay and the Betty’s Bay beaches, and the hiking trails running up into the Kogelberg. Clarence Drive itself, the R44 between Gordon’s Bay and Kleinmond, is one of the best-known coastal drives in the country, and Cape Town is reached along it or via the N2 through Grabouw.
